A Meal, a Moment, and a Lasting Impact at Ronald McDonald House

Pepin Academies Students Serve Up a Meal and Hope at Ronald McDonald House

For families staying at the Ronald McDonald House near Tampa General Hospital, a warm meal can mean more than just dinner. It can offer a moment of comfort during an incredibly difficult time.

Pepin Academies students recently stepped into the kitchen to provide exactly that. As part of a hands-on culinary training experience, they prepared and served a full meal for families navigating some of life’s toughest moments.

While preparing dinner, they also created moments of comfort for families who needed it most.

Each student, navigating their own learning challenges, took on roles as chefs, hosts, and teammates. Guided by Pepin Academies’ Chef Farrol Thomas and supported by The Bank of Tampa, they worked together to plan and serve an Italian feast for families whose children were receiving critical medical care.

For the students, the experience offered something invaluable: building confidence and developing real-world skills in a supportive, team-driven environment. For the families, it provided something just as meaningful: a warm, thoughtfully prepared meal and a reminder they were not alone.

The menu reflected both care and creativity, featuring Chicken Italiano with cream or creole sauce and spaghetti, served alongside a garden salad and garlic bread.

The idea began after leaders from The Bank of Tampa visited Pepin Academies’ student-run café and culinary classroom and saw an opportunity to connect students eager to learn with families in need of encouragement. What followed is a partnership rooted in workforce development and meaningful community service.

A pilot dinner last fall served 25 guests and left a lasting impression, with families expressing gratitude not just for the meal, but for the care behind it. That success carried forward into this event, as students once again stepped into the kitchen with purpose and pride.

The evening also marked the first time media captured the experience, highlighting everything from students working side-by-side in the kitchen to the shared moments between students and families gathered around the table.
